So after learning about IPs and Internet, what do I need? What is need is simple a domain name for eg 8toinfinity.com is a domain name, some web space to store your web pages and some email space to store your emails.

A domain name can be of the form 8toinfinity.com or 8toinfinity.com.sg or 8toinfinity.com.XX where XX can be a lot of variations.   The most popular ones on the Internet are Dot Com, Dot Net, Dot Biz.  Problems with these is Dot Coms are very difficult to get because speculators or those squatting on the domains not doing anything, not related to the domains just wanting to keep the domains hoping to make money through domain speculations.   You are normally left with the choice of your own country domain.  Or if you want to portray your company’s country, this will be better for eg 8toinfinity.com.sg is for Singapore Dot.my for Malaysia and so on.  But for country domains such as these, they normally have such restrictions such that only those businesses or persons in that particular country can register.  That differs to accordingly from country to country.

If unclear ask before registering.   That takes care of the domain aspects of what you will need.

One extremely important note is, when your hosting company registers the domain for you.  Ensure that the registrant is under your name as well as the administrative contact.  Registrant is the owner, if the hosting company registers the domain under their own company, it basically means that the legal owner is the hosting company.  Come one fine day when your web site is doing fantastic, they can claim it!  Or when you are moving hosting companies, you find that you cannot move because the domain is not yours!!

Don’t be surprise, practically every month, our company met with such distress refugees from other hosting companies.  A lot of times their domains are really gone and they have to get a new domain, wasting their initial time, effort and investments.   Litigation processes to take back the domains are possible, but that really depends on your legal system, but as we all know, the only winner in any court case are the lawyers.   It will be a costly affair overall, time and money.
