1 TB Drives

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

We have customers who are looking at 1 TB drives for their dedicated servers. Some even want as big as possible. One important thing which we normally ask customers to think is whether do they need even such big hard disks or not. Sure a lot of times, the bigger the better.

Not really so for servers. If you are using even near 1TB especially with lots of small files, you will find that the main bottle neck for your servers are from the Input/Output. Another thing to consider, rebuilding the hard disks if anything happen to it will take ages due to the size.

It is getting more and more difficult to find smaller hard disks on the market. In this case, opt for SCSI or SaS or even SSD. Such hard disks are built to better withstand the I/O requirements of servers. Remember Big doesn’t always equate to Better.
