I have had a lot of enquiries from clients who were asking me why were they receiving invoices from unknown names asking them to pay for domain trade marks out of no where. Some even had phone calls from China saying that their domain is about to be copyright and offered to help them get back their domains for crazy fees. For such cases, never pay a single cent, if they persisted report to the police. Even I had several of such calls. Just remember a domain registered to you under your name is yours. But they are trying to do is to scam money out of you by playing on your fears.

There was even a call from a China sounding lady to a client saying that she was from the police station and saying that my client broke a law and they can settle it for some money, when asked what law had he broken, the lady told him she don’t know, just pay up.

There is already enough pit traps in web hosting. One very serious one would be, for all domain owners do double check and triple check that the domain is registered under your name, not the hosting company name or your designer’s name. Every month we had calls from would be subscribers asking to see if we can help them if they sign up for our services.

The owner is the hosting provider/designer, basically the real owner would have a long case to fight to get it back and court cases aren’t cheap. My advice to all would be to stick to respectable hosting companies and also to do a whois to double check that your domain is actually registered under your name or your company’s name.

Another issue recently is checking of domain name, do not go anywhere to check for the availability of your domain name. Some Whois providers are just taking what you have searched for and registered first, so once you want to register, it is gone and you need to pay them extra for to get back that name.

On the Internet everything goes, be extra vigilant, always remember when something is too good to be true, it isn’t. Say you are given 5 GB of space, take a look at your own computer, 200GB hard disk? taking the overheads etc, for acceptable performance 100 GB can be use, meaning that only 20 sites can be hosted reasonably well in that server if everyone uses to full capacity. But the prices you are paying for can’t even buy you a cup of coffee. If you are having such income, where do you find money to buy your next PC when the existing PC breaks down? Where is the business model?

It is sad that we are seeing not just 5GB, 50 GB, 500 GB and now 5000GB hosting at the same prices. I certainly hope that some sanity return back to the web hosting industry.

For a web host, you do not just built a server, you need to host the server, especially in Singapore, datacentre and and bandwidth does not come cheap. 1 mbps is about 320 GB/mth and 1 mbps in Singapore pure Internet bandwidth cost about $300/mth, how much is your provider offering? Do you think that your provider can really provide what they offer?

I have a few clients who received their letters signed on it and fax it back, not checking that it is for the transfer of domain name ownership, and they asked me what to do? I mean what else can be done?
