Christmas Time Servers
Thursday, December 3rd, 2009Christmas time is normally a day of celebrations for all except for network engineers maintaining server systems. Given that the vast majority of our customers are corporate, Christmas time with its long weekend and holidays prove to be a great time for server maintenance in the datacentres. Hence during Christmas, it is the busiest period for our technical department who have to be busy changing the old servers, maintaining them for instance. It is the best time for maintenance as the majority of offices are closed. Maintenance will not affect our customers operations. For the few that are operating, we will schedule other timings but for 90% of our customers, this is the best time to take down the servers and do a proper maintenance.
Preventive maintenance is essential to prevent sudden server issues from occurring. We try to take away the element of uncertainty when it comes to server maintenance. The more uncertainty, the longer will be the downtime as time is needed to get the parts and to put back the servers online. Preventive maintenance does not 100% ensure that servers will not go down, but at least we covered most of the uncertainty.
