Happy New Year
2011 was an extremely busy year for 8 to Infinity Pte Ltd. We had a lot of migrations consolidating all servers into our own IPs and consolidating scattered about racks into only East and West location. With such consolidations, it enables us far more flexible compared to previous and allow us to offer a lot more services to our Customers.

Apache Vulnerability
Everyone using Apache do take note of this vulnerability which will affect a lot of the systems running Apache:
The Apache Software Foundation issued an alert, along with workarounds for the exploit, late Thursday evening, in advance of its promised patch.
“By sending specially crafted HTTP requests which include malformed range HTTP header, an attacker can disrupt the normal function of the web server, thus disallowing legitimate users to receive responses from the web server,” the development team wrote in its advisory. “This issue affects all Apache software versions and a patch has not been released yet.”
One server Migration – Multiple Servers setup
We have to migrate a particular server which the owner has problems because he had hard coded a lot of his programs and also have payment gateway tied to the old IP. We setup a new server for his migration, where he moved the old server to the new server and have the DNS pointed to the new server. We setup another redirector to redirect his existing traffic to new server. This ensured that nothing was lost and we had a successful transfer. It was tough work, but if we can lessen the burden of our customers, we are more than happy to do it.

Early in the Morning Server Issues
Early in the morning, two servers are down, one server cannot do remote access, the other change IP and changed it wrongly such that even after she requested for a reboot, server is still down. Looks like have to send someone down to take a look at the server and change the IPs for them properly as well as do a reboot of the Windows server that cannot remote properly.
8 to Infinity Offers
Blade Server
This is a typical server blade system. We have a few in the datacenter. Useful but problem is the consumption of electricity per square foot is much more intensive. Therefore new generations of datancenters are built with even more power per square feet to deal with the increasing usage of blade servers.

Singapore Qmail Migration
8 to Infinity is doing a Qmail upgrade for the Lucky and Unagi main Qmail systems to a much faster platform.
Common post-migration issues:
1)Problem: DNS Caching at client side. Unable to retrieve via POP3
Solution: Ask client to login to webmail to check their email to ensure they can login. Then get them to restart computer+modem to clear DNS cache
2)Problem: Client might see double “Trash/Draft/Sent” folder in webmail
Solution: This is due to a conversion of a IMAP server. There will be no impact on this, client can safely ignore it.
Otherwise, everything should be working perfectly fine.

Maintenance of Web site
A good web site, with lots of interative features such as forums, blogs, cms, shopping carts etc requires a lot of programming. Also a lot of web designers tend to use open source which is free. Butt here is an inherent problem. You pay a lot of money for the web site but the programming needs to be patched once in a while to prevent hacking. A lot of companies just pay for the web design without maintenance. When they are hacked, they do not know what to do and ask us as web hosting company to help them solve their issues. Cleaning up a hacked site cost a lot of time and efforts, which we as a specialized web hosting company do not have the developers necessary to do it. We do recommend web developers who are our resellers, but they too have to charge to make a living. Nothing is free in the world especially when originally the web site owner do not have maintenance contract with the initial web developers. Such cases are becoming more and more common as companies look for more fanciful stuff ignoring the fact that such maintenance relies on good internal IT team or maintenance team.
